What is my soul purpose is the one question you will never be able to answer, if you keep looking externally. Because you are your soul’s purpose. This is one of life’s biggest questions. And there’s a multitude of how-to guides and books out there about the topic.
So why search for something that you already have? Stop searching for “it” and start nurturing “it”.
“The soul of us is never confused about why it is here.
It only asks us to wake up and see the breadcrumb clues it has been leaving all along.” ― Jacob Nordby
THE BIG QUESTION: WHAT IS MY SOUL PURPOSE?
We are the human form of our souls’ experience on earth. The purpose of this experience is to learn, grow and expand our consciousness. And to help each other learn, grow and expand. So if we are to nurture our soul purpose to “find it”, then that means we need to know who we are. We need to know what our gifts, strengths and powers are to know our true purpose.
Each of us has a unique combination of these. This defines our individuality and our uniqueness as people. It is this unique combination that we bring to the roles we fulfill in our families, at work and society at large. Think of it as your secret song that only you know the words to.
As stated in the quote above, there is, at the core of who we are, no confusion about what our purpose is. But, we have become clouded by social conditioning. As a result, this has drowned out our connection to who we truly are. In some cases you will just know what direction you need to take, but in some, if not most cases, it’s a long journey. A journey of many lessons and epiphanies and discovery of the breadcrumbs that enrich our life experience.
I always tell my clients that if they keep searching for it as a thing outside of who they are, they will definitely not “find it.” In connecting to your true essence – knowing who you are – the journey matters. It matters that you observe what is happening in the now, to pick up clues through your growth journey.
MY SOUL PURPOSE: A PERSONAL REFLECTION
If I think back on my own journey, I have always known, since a very young age, that I am to help people. The specifics weren’t very clear, but it manifested in my very strong desire to be a doctor when I grew up. Many of my childhood friends and siblings (and their dolls) will recall being “patients” in my hospitals and consulting rooms. Smarties and Jelly Tots being the cure-all for any ailment at the time.
Although this dream was very strong, it never materialised. It was a huge regret for most of my young adult life. As I got older and traversed my growth journey, my “purpose” came into sharper focus. This was the process of connecting to who I truly am. I soon realised that becoming a doctor was the only way my child mind knew how “helping and healing people” could manifest. The more I connected to who I truly was, the clearer “it” became.
I got better at following my intuition and paid more attention to the resonance of what worked and felt right for me. This resonance related to things I was “naturally” good at that really made my heart sing and also things that I needed to refine. Fast forward a few years, here I am working as a life coach helping people heal, move on from their past and connect to who they truly are to nurture their soul purpose. This entire process energises me on a very deep level and truly makes my heart sing. Read more here.
YOUR TURN…..GET STARTED ON CONNECTING TO YOUR SOUL PURPOSE
Here are 10 journal prompts to reflect on to get you going. Hopefully this tugs a thread that helps you unravel things:
What do you absolutely love doing?
Reflect on the things that you are good at – naturally or acquired skills.
Reflect on what you do or can do that the world needs.
What makes you proud to be you?
Write down what inspires you, brings you joy and makes your heart sing.
Why do people love being with you? (friends, family, colleagues, etc). Consider also what people always ask you for help with or always come to you for.
Reflect on a time when you felt most alive and connected to yourself: what were you doing? where were you?
Think back to what your childhood dreams, passions and fantasies were about.
What do you most like to read about, teach or research?
Which activities make you lose complete track of time and space?
Once you have reflected on these, take note of what the emerging themes or patterns are.
So if you keep searching for something that you already have, you most certainly will miss it. Stop spending your life searching and rather spend it being who you truly are meant to be – the expression of your soul’s true essence. Your soul purpose is about knowing yourself – it’s about having the courage to stand true in who you are. So, follow your own golden compass.
I would love to hear your story and how you are connecting the breadcrumbs in your journey. Read more about my journey to connecting to who I am here.
